Message from the Chair

As many of you may already know, I have stepped down as Chair of the TRB Programming, Planning and Systems Evaluation Committee. This was a difficult decision for me as I have truly enjoyed my time with committee. The friendships that have been established and the work that’s been accomplished will always be a highlight for me.

The reason for this decision had to do a recent change in my career at WSDOT. Last fall, I moved into a leadership role in the WSDOT Maintenance Program as the Assistant State Maintenance Engineer. This role and my new responsibilities required me to step away from this aspect of TRB earlier than what I had wanted.

As far as TRB, I am still involved, but have now transitioned to the Maintenance and Operations committees (yes, I’ve officially crossed over to the dark side and am now a “Marriott Guy” for the Annual Meeting). While I will be spending more time at this other venue, I still plan to make it back from time to time and check in on what’s happening at the Hilton (especially since the remodel is finally complete).

I look forward to staying to touch. Take care and best wishes to you and to the future of ADA50!

Call for Papers

As discussed at the Annual Meeting and as posted previously on this website, I would encourage committee members and friends to consider using the web site as a forum to generate ideas for papers. The ideas generated today will help as we prepare for the Summer Meeting in July and continue on to the Annual Meeting in January.

With that, what’s on your mind regarding programming, planning and system evaluation?

The following information regarding NCHRP’s Virtual Conference on Research Needs in Transportation Planning was recently received. The registration link is embedded in the message below. If any members or friends of ADA50 participate, please let me know and/or post your thoughts on the virtual conference. We may also want to follow up with submitting our research needs statements as requested to be included in the virtual conference:

Please pass on the information below to your committees – A “Virtual Conference on Research Needs in Transportation Planning” will be kicked off via a webinar on March 8, 2010. You may have seen the announcement through TRB or AASHTO.  This effort is funded by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Project 8-36(95).

We’d specifically like to encourage you to invite members and friends of TRB committees that focus on issues related to transportation planning to participate.  You can forward on the message below with the registration link.  In addition, a web site has been developed for this research effort, www.TransportationPlanningNeeds.com, and includes information on a set of “breakout sessions” that will focus on sets of planning topics in order to gather focused input on research needs in these topic areas; it also includes forums for discussing these topics.

Finally, if your committee has recently developed a set of research priorities or research statements, please pass them onto our team via e-mail to me at mgrant@icfi.comor Kathleen Rooney or Terence Plaskon (cc:ed here). We’d like to include all of your research planning efforts in the review and discussions on research needs. Thank you!
